SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is asking drivers to slow down and move over for road crews that are busy repairing potholes on the state’s highways and interstates.
Non-emergency pothole patching typically takes place during non-peak travel periods, often requiring temporary lane closures.
“Potholes unfortunately can be anticipated to form as a result of the weather patterns at this time of year,” Omer Osman, secretary of Illinois Transportation. “We will be doing our best to make repairs as they develop, but we ask for your cooperation as well to ensure everyone’s safety. Pothole patching operations are work zones. Please be on alert for the orange IDOT trucks, reducing your speed and moving over so they have room to work.”
Snow, rain and freezing temperatures we’ve seen recently have caused potholes across Illinois. Potholes form from water getting into or under the pavement.
As water freezes and thaws, the pavement shifts, buckles or breaks. When vehicles drive over those weakened spots, they leave potholes.
IDOT says drivers should expect brief lane closures during pothole repairs, and should allow themselves extra time to get where they’re going.
If you see IDOT vehicles and workers, slow down, move over and give them space. It’s state law.
