PEORIA, Ill. – Road conditions worsened in Peoria County as snow fell and temperatures hovered around the freezing mark Friday morning.
Peoria County Highway Department Engineer Amy McLaren says crews prepared trucks before the snowstorm. She says there was no pretreatment of roads before the snow, but some residue from previous salting remained.
McLaren says the biggest focus for crews is clearing hills as fast as possible.
“We do make sure we get those pretty well salted, but we just want everyone to be really careful,” McLaren said. “Those locations, hills and vertical hills and then the curves in the road, just be mindful that’s a place where you can run off the road easily.”
McLaren says crews have seen numerous vehicles in ditches Friday morning, and Sheriff Chris Watkins says several accidents have occurred.
McLaren says crews will continue working through the day and for a couple hours after the snow stops falling. That’s in anticipation of falling temperatures this evening below freezing.
