PEORIA, Ill. – A big project a long time in the making for downtown Peoria begins Monday.
Work to convert Adams and Jefferson Streets downtown back to two-lane roads will take place – starting with some parking restrictions on the south and southwest parts of Adams.
City officials are optimistic about the eventual impacts.
“Two-way streets are, actually, beneficial to slow traffic down,” said Nick McMillion, spokesperson, Peoria Public Works, to 25 News. “That is one common complaint that we hear all the time, especially in this corridor, is that drivers drive too fast on Adams and Jefferson, especially in the downtown area.”
Among the work also planned as part of the $19 million project: shortening pedestrian crossings, adding bike lanes, new traffic signals, and overlaying of the existing pavement – that’s in addition to having one lane in each direction.
