EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The quick thinking of an EastPort Marina worker last month saved the lives of two people.
On February 12th, Justin Smith spotted two people who had jumped into the frigid waters of the Illinois River. Smith jumped in himself when he spotted they were tired and barely able to swim to pull the pair out of the river.
At Tuesday’s East Peoria City Council meeting, Smith was recognized for his efforts. Mayor John Kahl read a proclamation in honor of Smith, and presented him with an award.
“He’s a very humble guy, and it took a lot to get him to come here tonight. But it was very important for us to recognize you for your efforts, and that’s a big deal,” Kahl said after presenting the award.
Fon du Lac Police Chief Chance Barlow says Smith’s actions that day made sure it was not a recovery operation by them.
