The Bahamas are in for a long recovery after Hurricane Dorian.
Rich Draeger, Tri-County Director of Development for the Salvation Army in Peoria, says Corps personnel are already there. The Salvation Army has five existing locations in the Bahamas, and workers there will begin handing out meals and hygiene kits later this week.
Draeger tells WMBD’s Greg and Dan, as is the case in most disasters, sending items to the Bahamas is not really an option.
“They’re just asking us to have folks help provide monetary donations, so that they can buy the necessary equipment and supplies that they need.”
Draeger says if you write a check to the Salvation Army, make sure it is designated for Hurricane Dorian. But, there are other ways you can give.
“Online is an easy way to do that. You can go to Help Salvation Army.org, or you can charge it on the phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY,” Draeger said.
Locally-based Midwest Food Bank is working with the Salvation Army to provide meals and hygiene kits to people in the Bahamas. They will also be providing assistance soon to people along the southeast coast of the U.S.
