UPDATED 4:57 P.M.
DUNLAP, Ill. – Officials in the Dunlap School District say there’s no immediate threat, even after a gun was found inside a school locker Tuesday.
In an automated message sent to parents by Superintendent Scott Dearman and obtained by WMBD, he says two students reported to their principal that a student, at the time, had possibly brought the gun to school.
Police, the school resources officer, and others investigated, and confirmed a gun being found in a student backpack.
Dearman says at no time threats were made to students, and all necessary steps are being taken to make sure safety is addressed. That includes an extra police presence at the school the rest of the week.
Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins says the 13-year-old juvenile who brought the gun to school is being arrested on charges of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Handgun under the age of 18, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
The investigation continues, and while two students did the right thing, a number of students are believed to have known something, but said nothing. Watkins says parents need to have a talk with their kids.
