EAST PEORIA, Ill. — City leaders in East Peoria say they continue “refining” regulations on short term rental properties and they’ve approved significant changes to local ordinances.
City Council members voted unanimously on Tuesday to impose a new annual licensing fee on short term rental property owners.
There has not been one in place since East Peoria first approved regulations on the businesses.
Commissioner Dan Decker said, “I’ve been pretty impressed so far with the work our departments have done to make sure that those who have (short term rentals), ensuring they fit the codes the way they’re supposed to.”
At the same time, the city will give certain AirBnB or VRBO style property and business owners a break — no longer requiring them to live on or near their rental property in East Peoria.
“The ZBA (Zoning Board of Adjustments) recommended this to city council for approval. The expectations for the property owners is that they’re not gonne need to be on site for 20 days of the year,” said Commissioner Mark Hill at Tuesday’s meeting.
Commissioners agree it would open the market up in East Peoria for more longer term visitor stays, perhaps for traveling nurses and others in similar lines of work.
This news comes as local governments across the Peoria area continue refining their regulations on short-term rentals.
