SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois House is preparing to debate a proposed $45.6 billion budget and relief plan in the final week of the spring session.
The budget, crafted by House Democrats, funds public safety measures, schools and the Illinois Family Recovery Act.
Rep. Mike Zalewski, of Riverside, says that includes suspending the grocery sales tax and providing some property tax relief.
“We also do a low-income family rebate. Based on income, they get a $100 one-time rebate for single filers, and a $200 rebate one-time for joint filers, and a $50 rebate for each dependent,” Zalewski.
House Democrats also want to expand the earned income tax credit and double the tax credit for Illinois teachers buying their own classroom supplies.
Rep. Greg Harris, of Chicago, says the budget proposal also funds law enforcement and other vital programs.
“So, our budget has to meet the needs of all these people. It has to solidify our economic strengths, and at the same time help those who are still struggling,” Harris said.
