PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria County Animal Protection Services, or PCAPS, has a new mobile service unit that’s facilitating spay and neuter services on-site.
PCAPS Director Becky Spencer says it’s something that’s been years in the works.
“For many years we partnered with the Peoria County Veterinary Medical Association to take care of spay/neuter surgeries for sheltered animals, and to help us with some of our low-cost programs in the community. Unfortunately over the years, it became very difficult for them to meet the demand of the animals that we have here at the shelter,” Spencer says.
PCAPS has a new agreement with Brown Animal Hospital that sends a doctor to the mobile service unit three days a week.
“We are spaying and neutering 8-10 animals a day, on those three days a week, right here on-site here at PCAPS,” Spencer says.
Spencer says being able to do spay and neuter services at PCAPS is life-changing for pets waiting to be adopted at their shelter.
“It’s allowed us to do some same-day adoptions here at PCAPS. Animals by law have to be spayed or neutered before they go home from an animal shelter, when they’re adopted…so we want to make sure that’s done…and done in a timely manner,” Spencer says.
