PEORIA, Ill. — A storm system that brought at least one tornado to southeast Kansas could create some severe weather conditions here in Central Illinois later in the day Saturday.
It’s what we’re hearing from 25 News Chief Meteorologist Chuck Collins, who says the primary threat will likely be damaging winds and the chance for some widespread power outages.
He says, however, heavy downpours, hail and isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out for Central Illinois communities.
Late Friday, a large tornado was confirmed to have touched down in areas near Wichita, Kansas, injuring at least a dozen people and damaging or destroying hundreds of homes.
National Weather Service crews are still surveying the damage in Andover, Kansas, which appears to be the hardest hit community there.
An estimated 900 buildings were reportedly in the path of the Kansas twister.
Governor Laura Kelly has already issued an emergency declaration for the local area around Wichita and there remain at least 6,000 utility customers in the area without electricity.
