EAST PEORIA, Ill. — In a move to help curb incidents of crime, East Peoria is following Peoria’s lead in adding new automated license plate readers to help local police.
During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, city commissioners voted to approve roughly $49,000 in initial cost for the new license plate readers.
Mayor John Kahl said the equipment would require another $40,000 in annual cost to keep and maintain.
Kahl said the city will implement policies for the license plate readers very similar to those already in place with Peoria Police.
“We will implement one that will mirror that policy, basically establishing guidelines for proper use, training, data storage, while also protecting constitutional rights and privacy.”
He says the license plate readers have worked to great affect in Peoria and several other nearby towns and cities as well.
