PEORIA, Ill. – A second man has been convicted for a 2021 shooting that took the life of a 17-year-old Peoria Manual High School student.
A Peoria County jury deliberated around an hour to find 22-year-old Gary Irby guilty of first-degree murder for the October 6, 2021 shooting death of Jerry Snipes Jr.
Testimony during the three-day trial showed Snipes was shot 10 times on N. Linn Street. Many of those shots were fired into the back of Snipes body, according to a release from Peoria County State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos.
Police said nine shots came from one shotgun, and the other came from a second shotgun, indicating two people shot Snipes.
The jury viewed GPS monitoring data and surveillance video putting Irby and Jerry Moore Jr. at the crime scene when the shooting happened, and prosecutors said a witness saw both men armed with guns moments before Snipes was shot.
Moore, who is now 21, was convicted last September of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 80 years in prison.
Prosecutors said Irby could face a life sentence because the jury determined he fired one of the guns. His sentencing is set for August 2.
A third defendant, 20-year-old Tyanique White, from Peoria, is awaiting trial on first-degree murder and aggravated battery charges.
