NORMAL, Ill. – State championships in Illinois for girls basketball will continue to remain Normal for the next five years.
The girls state finals will remain at CEFCU Arena on the Illinois State University campus, in a five-year contract extension announced on Thursday. The announcement was made by the Illinois High School Association, Illinois State University, and the Bloomington-Normal Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The first editions were held at Horton Fieldhouse in Normal in 1977, then moved to Champaign, before finding its current home at CEFCU Arena in 1992.
“CEFCU Arena feels like home for the IHSA Girls Basketball State Finals, so we are excited to be able to announce an extension that pushes us closer to 40 years of the state tourney being held on the ISU campus,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson.
Next year will see a change in scheduling for the girls and boys state finals. Each team that makes the final four will play one game a day for two days, starting on Thursday. All championship games will be held on Saturday. Previously, teams that played in the third place game had to play two games on the same day.
