PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – A detainee in the Peoria County Jail is dead after being found unresponsive in a holding cell overnight.
Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins says around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, a correctional officer found the man unresponsive in the cell alone.
The jail’s medical staff performed life-saving measures, along with several rounds of Narcan and epinephrine, but to no avail.
The man was taken to Carle Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
Watkins says the 31-year-old was arrested by Peoria Police around 7:15 p.m. Monday for preliminary charges of battery, assault, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to property from an alleged incident at a downtown Peoria restaurant.
The man was taken by PPD to a hospital for an injury to his foot and was treated and released, then taken to the Peoria County Jail around 10:20 p.m.
The man was put in a holding cell when he arrived at the jail due to having a medical boot on his foot.
Watkins says correctional officers checked on the man numerous times, and at 12:48 a.m., he was found unresponsive.
Illinois State Police were contacted immediately and are overseeing an investigation into the death, along with the Peoria County Coroner’s Office, per sheriff’s office policy.
Watkins says there were no initial signs of foul play in the death.
