PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Park District’s reimagined July 3rd celebration event made its debut on Wednesday at Glen Oak Park.
Traditionally, the park district held a fireworks display on the evening of July 3rd. But the board voted in March to move in a different direction, choosing to go with a family-friendly event during the late-morning and afternoon hours.
“The Streets Belong to Me: Glen Oak Park” featured obstacle courses, face painting, food trucks, and more.
Event Supervisor Nick Conrad says feedback from families about the event has been positive.
“Just thankful that there’s an event to enjoy, that doesn’t cost to attend, it’s kinda centrally located here in Peoria, in one of our premiere parks in the park district,” Conrad said.
Conrad says while the park district hoped to have more time to plan the event, he’s pleased with how the event came together in only a few months. He says if word of mouth about the event is positive, it could return to Glen Oak Park next year.
Tiffany Jordan learned about the event from a family friend, and brought her kids to see the bounce houses.
“They had this at the Worldwide Day of play, and my girls absolutely loved coming down the slides and everything,” Jordan said.
Jordan says what she was looking forward to the most from the event is letting her children burn off energy outside.
