BARTONVILLE, Ill. – The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office and the Peoria County Coroner’s Office are investigating the discovery of a body found in the Illinois River.
Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins says a fisherman found the body around 9:32 a.m. Saturday near the 7000 block of S. Adam Street in Bartonville about 300 yards from the Shade-Lohmann Bridge near the Peoria Lock and Dam. The body was on the Peoria County side of the river and was caught on the dam.
The body is that of a black male. Watkins said the age of the victim is not immediately available due to the condition of the body. It’s believed the body was in the river for at least 24 hours.
Fondulac Park District officers retrieved the body from the river using their boat.
The Peoria County Coroner’s Office will release more details once the body is identified and there is an autopsy. However, Watkins said, preliminary findings show no obvious signs of trauma.
The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office provided photos of the shirt and a pendant the man was wearing.
Anyone who may be able to help identity the victim or with more information is urged to call Peoria County Sheriff’s Detective Meeks at 309-696-7112.
