PEORIA, Ill. – A 14-year-old from the Bloomington-Normal area has been identified as the victim found in the Illinois River Saturday near Bartonville.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says the body has been positively identified as Leron Griffin.
A fisherman found Griffin’s body near the Peoria Lock and Dam behind Liberty Steel.
Harwood says an autopsy on Griffin shows he died of drowning, and there was no evidence of perpetrated trauma or injury.
He says Griffin was in the water for no more than two days.
Harwood says the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office is investigating how, why, where, and when Griffin ended up in the river.
