MORTON, Ill. – A tentative deal for a new contract has reportedly been reached between Morton School District #709 and its teachers union.
In a joint statement from the district and the Morton Education Association today (Tuesday)…a deal was reached last (Monday) night after a six-and-a-half hour federal mediation session.
The next step is working to solidify language in the contract, and says because of that, no details about the contract will be released at this time.
MEA leadership is scheduled to hold meetings for teachers early next month, with ratification of the deal expected at the August 6th board meeting.
“We feel that this is a very fair settlement that reflects financial responsibility while showing support and appreciation of the outstanding work of our faculty,” said MEA President Shane Weyland and Morton Superintendent Craig Smock.
Earlier this month, the MEA released results of a survey that found 75% of teachers were considering leaving teaching, with most citing low pay as the reason.
