PEORIA, Ill. – The federal government is spending nearly $15 million on electric buses for Peoria’s public transit system.
Battery-powered electric buses will replace the Greater Peoria Mass Transit District’s (CityLink) diesel buses. Funding was announced by U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen, and U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth on Tuesday.
CityLink currently has three electric and four hybrid buses in its fleet. The federal grant will pay for 10 more battery-electric buses.
MetroLINK in Rock Island County is receiving $10 million to expand its operations and maintenance center to help transition its fleet to battery-electric buses.
“The new fleet of electric buses that will be coming to Rock Island and Peoria will help us reduce our carbon footprint and create more sustainable communities for future generations,” Sorensen said in a statement.
