PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Public School Board wants more time to decide on a new committee.
The board at its meeting on Monday tabled a proposal for the creation of a succession committee. The committee would create a plan that would prepare for planned and unplanned changes in senior personnel in the district, which includes the superintendent.
Some believed the committee would be focused on a potential exit of Superintendent Doctor Sharon DesMoulin-Kherat, but board member Martha Ross says it’s not the case.
“Although she has two more years on her contract, none of us are sure that we’re going to be here,” Ross said. “What if something happens? What’s our plan, if it’s not in writing.”
Kherat herself told the board that there is a chain of command already in place, in case changes occur.
Board member Lynne Costic says it was “good business” to have a succession plan, saying it’s common practice in businesses.
The issue was tabled over concerns from board members over language in a potential plan, and trying to get new board members sworn-in this month up to speed on policies of the school board. Two of those new members, Chanel Hargrave and Larry Ivory, were sworn-in at Monday’s meeting.
Peoria Federation of Teachers President Jeffrey Adkins-Dutro spoke before the board discussed the topic, requesting more discussion with community members about the plan.
