Have you had any tax liabilities between 2011 and 2018?
You may be eligible for amnesty.
The Illinois Department of Revenue announced Tuesday that beginning Oct. 1 until Nov. 15, eligible taxpayers who pay eligible liabilities in full will not incur any penalties or interest.
Sam Salustro, Public Information Officer for the Illinois Department of Revenue said those eligible will be notified.
“The department is sending out notices right now to people who have unpaid tax liabilities,” Salustro said.
It is a chance for those eligible to get a clean slate with the state.
“It is a great opportunity for anyone with these liabilities to kind of come in, do their civic duty, have their taxes paid in full,” Salustro said. “But, to also have these associated fees and interests wiped off their records.”
To participate in the Tax Amnesty Program, taxpayers must pay all outstanding tax on an amnesty qualifying period.
Eligible liabilities do not include local government taxes, property taxes, or any bad check fees or collections fees.
The Governor’s Office of Management and Budget estimated it will receive around $175 million in unpaid taxes from the one-time program.
“More importantly, people want to know the tax system is fair, and this is a good way to show them it is fair. We’re making sure that everyone pays what they owe, and everyone can feel good about the tax system,” Salustro said.
