PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – One person died after an apparent single vehicle crash in Peoria County.
The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office responded just before 11:30 A.M. Tuesday to Smithville Road near Largent Creek on reports of damage to a culvert.
Property owners discovered a vehicle on its top that had crashed nearby in the woods before deputies arrived, at least 40 yards away from the road.
Deputies had to cut through brush to get the vehicle and found a 31-year-old male from Mapleton inside it with no signs of life, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office says the crash may have occurred at around 9:00 P.M. Monday when nearby residents had heard a tree falling.
The sheriff’s office says speed may have been a factor in the crash.
The crash is under investigation, with the driver’s identity to be released by the Peoria County Coroner.
