PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria County judge ordered a man accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend to remain in jail.
25 News reports prosecutors testified at 43-year-old Stevie Linwood’s detention hearing Wednesday that nothing could mitigate his risk to the community.
He is accused of shooting 35-year-old Zaneta Winters in the head at her home Sunday night, along with her neighbor who came to aid Winters. Winters was declared brain dead on Monday, while the neighbor was listed in critical condition.
Prosecutors testified that Linwood told police he was unsure of when he grabbed the gun, nor of when he did the shooting. He also reportedly told police that he and Winters were arguing over alleged infidelity, and that it was just him, Winters, and their seven-year-old son inside the house at the time of the shooting.
Linwood reportedly ditched the gun while walking to a nearby liquor store after the shooting, saying he knew he would be arrested and wanted to drink until then. Police reportedly found the gun used by Linwood in the walking path he used.
Prosecutors also brought up Linwood’s criminal history, including serving five years in prison for a 2011 involuntary manslaughter conviction.
Linwood is charged with First Degree Murder and Attempted Murder, and is due back in court for an arraignment on September 4th.
