PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria firefighters report a high performance drag racing vehicle burst into flames late Thursday, leading to more than a million dollars in damage to a local business.
According to a release from the Peoria Fire Department, crews responded to the business in the 900 block of West Detweiler in Peoria around 3:20 p.m. to find a racing vehicle burning inside.
They say thick black smoke was rolling skyward from the single-story brick-and-mortar when firefighters rolled up to the scene.
The business owner stated that he was dyno-tuning the vehicle when it suddenly burst into flames.
Crews quickly extinguished the blaze and the business owner was able to escape unharmed.
Peoria Fire officials estimate the damage to the business totaled more than $1.2 million, mostly due to fire, smoke and water damage to contents inside the business.
The building reportedly suffered about $70,000 dollars in damage.
