TAZEWELL COUNTY, Ill. – A Washington man convicted of drug-induced homicide was sentenced on Tuesday to 24 years in prison.
39-year-old Brent Dusch was sentenced for the March 22, 2022 death of Cassondra Whitman, who was also from Washington.
Whitman was found dead in her apartment after police said she took fentanyl, methamphetamine, and Klonopin.
Investigators said Dusch gave Whitman fentanyl-laced drugs, but told police he tried to save her by administering CPR and giving her Narcan.
According to 25 News, a witness claimed he heard Dusch saying he sold someone “bad dope”, cutting the drugs to make more money.
Prosecutors also believe Dusch is linked to the overdose of an inmate at the Tazewell County Jail, as surveillance video showed him passing a small bag to another inmate.
An East Peoria Police officer testified that after responding to a call about Dusch sleeping in a Hardee’s restaurant, she found a bag containing what was later tested to be meth.
Several of Whitman’s family members gave victim impact statements to the judge.
Whitman’s mother Jacqueline asked for a long prison sentence, saying she wonders why God took her daughter away, but not Dusch.
Whitman’s young daughter asked why Dusch took away her mother.
