PEORIA, Ill. – Gold Star families across central Illinois came together in Peoria on Saturday to remember their loved ones.
The 10th annual commemoration hosted by America’s Gold Star Families was held at the Peoria Riverfront Museum. Gold Star families are those who have lost a family member during active duty military service.
“It’s just basically for families to enjoy each other,” AGSF Board of Directors President Darin Funk told 25 News. “This year we decided to have it down here at Peoria Riverfront for the second half of our program. Families have time to talk to each other and heal.
AGSF Executive Director Patti Latch says the commemoration is a chance to share their grief.
“Our lives go on, and our heroes would want us to be productive, and not live grieving all the time, but to find purpose yet again,” said Latch.
Each family received donated gifts to honor their sacrifice that included books, quilts, and shoes.
