MORTON, Ill. – For a third year in a row, the Morton High School Marching Band took first place honors over the weekend in finals competition at the Illinois State Marching Band Championships.
The competition took place on Saturday at Illinois State University’s Hancock Stadium in Normal. The Morton Band won their 2A classification in preliminary competition, then returned to the field in finals competition, which included bands from all six classifications.
Overall, 42 bands competed, with 15 bands in the finals. Morton won first place, followed by Prospect High School (Mount Prospect) in second place, and third place went to Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights).
In Class 2A competition, Morton’s band won Best Music, Best Visual, and Best General Effect, finishing first over Galesburg and Grayslake North.
The Morton Band has won the 2A classification at the Illinois State Marching Band Championships for 19 consecutive years.
“The band was fired up and working hard this week,” Co-Director of Bands Andrew Empey says. “Our students work ethic and determination are second to none and we couldn’t be more proud of them.”
The Morton band recently won Grand Champion awards at the Washington Invitational and the Normal Invitational.
Closing the competitive season, the Morton Band heads to the Bands of America Super Regional in St. Louis on October 25-26.
A “Community Night” performance of Morton’s “Spinning Out” show is set for Tuesday, October 29 at 7 p.m. at Morton High School’s Carper Field. The event is free and open to the public.
