PEORIA Ill. – The man accused of shooting and killing an innocent 10-year-old bystander in Peoria, in September, has pleaded not-guilty.
According to 25News — the plea came Thursday morning, for 33-year-old Maurice Sargent — who says he did not kill 10-year-old Torres Lamar Johnson on September 29th at the CityScape Apartments.
Police say the shooting stemmed from a drug-deal went wrong — ending in gunfire.
Torres Johnson was not involved in the interaction — but was walking in the area — before being shot and killed.
Sargent is facing charges of first degree murder, an armed habitual criminal, and a charge from a previous armed burglary case.
With Sargent’s not-guilty plea during his arraignment hearing Thursday — he is expected to appear in court for a pretrial hearing in November — followed by a jury trial in December.
