PEORIA, Ill. – We “Fall Back” this weekend, ending Daylight Saving Time early Sunday morning.
For decades, the time change every six months has become a reminder to check all of the smoke detectors in your home.
“It was an initiative that started at the international level, and it trickled down to each state…and it’s such a great time of year to use that. Whoever came up with that message was a genius, and it’s highly effective,” Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger says.
Sollberger says when you check the batteries in your smoke detectors, you should also check the date they were installed. If the smoke detectors are more than 10 years old, it’s time to replace them.
“So, what you run into is just technology, if the unit is older than 10 years old, there’s better technology, better sensing capabilities with the newer smoke alarms. An added feature with the newer alarms since January 2023 is that they have built-in 10-year batteries, so you no longer have to change the batteries at Daylight Saving Time,” Sollberger says.
The Peoria Fire Department has several hundred new model smoke alarms that are equipped with ten-year batteries available to residents that need them.
