MOLINE, Ill. – Congressman Eric Sorensen says he’s looking ahead after what was a “hard day” for his party.
The Moline Democrat is the projected winner of a second term in the U.S. House of Representatives over Republican challenger Joe McGraw of Rockford.
Sorensen’s party did not fare better nationally, with FOX News projecting Republicans to win control of the U.S. Senate, and are favored to take control of the House. Former Republican President Donald Trump is the projected winner of the White House over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
“If we just sit in Capitol Hill and we just argue with one another, while real people back home suffer, we’re not doing our jobs,” Sorensen said.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday morning, Sorensen said people could “choose to move forward with division” or communicate what his party is all about. He says he plans to do his part to help the people of the 17th District.
Sorensen says some of his focuses moving forward are creating jobs in the district, reproductive rights for women, and working on passing a new farm bill.
While Sorensen didn’t offer details on why he believes Vice President Kamala Harris suffered defeat to Trump, he says he doesn’t want to worry about things he doesn’t have control over. Sorensen says what he can control in the 17th District is his record in his two years in Congress, which includes replacing lead pipes in water service lines and disaster relief after storms in July.
Sorensen says he wants to continue listening to both sides and work on issues in a bipartisan manner.
