SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A new awareness campaign by the Illinois Department of Transportation might be targeting some of the younger drivers out there — or, at least, anyone who likes playing video games.
The new campaign is called “It’s Not A Game.” The TV and radio ads, along with social media and a dedicated website, are designed to look like an eight bit video game, but also brings awareness to driver and pedestrian traffic safety.
“It’s a little bit of a different concept — trying to get, obviously, attention and create awareness about this important issue,” said Paul Wappel, IDOT spokesperson. “The ‘It’s Not a Game’ safety campaign will educate drivers that safety isn’t a game. Mistakes come with real consequences.”
Wappel says more than 1,300 people died on Illinois roads last year — the sixth consecutive year of more than 1,000 deaths.
“We’re trying to drive home the message that there are no extra lives, no second chances, no respawns, to get it right when you’re behind the wheel,” said Wappel.
