PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – Two men were arrested after allegedly derailing a train Monday afternoon near Bartonville.
The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were notified by Bartonville Police of the two men detained after the derailment on Sanitation Road.
The two were later identified as 18-year-old Caleb Finley and 20-year-old Jimmy Johnson, both of Bartonville.
An engineer with Union Pacific reportedly saw the pair derailing the device and called police, where officers found them walking the area.
Police learned Finley and Johnson allegedly intentionally moved a derailing device that was attached to the rails, then watched it go over the device and derail.
The train’s wheels were damaged after it went into gravel, with damage to the wheel, tracks, and labor to fix it estimated at around $80,000. The sheriff’s office says a crane will be needed to put the train back on its tracks.
Finley and Johnson were both arrested on charges of Criminal Trespass to Property, Reckless Conduct, and Placing an Object on Railroad Tracks. Both were taken to the Peoria County Jail.
No one was injured.
