PEORIA, Ill. – The race to fill a judge’s seat in Peoria County’s 10th Judicial Circuit came down to the wire.
With results made official on Wednesday after the final mail-in ballots were counted on Tuesday, Democrat John Spears defeated Republican Frank Ierulli by 63 votes, a difference of .08%.
Of the 76,077 votes cast in the race, Spears received 38,070 while Ierulli received 38,007.
Spears held a lead throughout the past two weeks, with a gap of only seven votes after Election Night. But his lead grew slowly over the two weeks that mail-in ballots received after Election Day were counted.
Ierulli received more votes on Election Day, receiving 54.68% of the vote with a gap of more than 3,000 votes. He also won the early voting count, with 53.68% of the vote, with a gap of more than 1,600 votes.
But Spears’ received 62.48% of the vote via mail-in ballots, receiving nearly 5,000 more votes than Ierulli.
