SPRINGFIELD, IL–On Oct. 1, seniors and people with disabilities can begin applying for the state’s winter energy assistance program.
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, helps families struggling to keep their heat on.
“It’s an income qualification. So, families that income-qualified can sign up. And, then the Community Action Agency works with the utility to assist that family with their utility bills over the winter months,” said Illinois Office of Community Assistance Director David Wortman.
The program makes payments on behalf of eligible households.
“We start in October. We start with senior citizens. And, November we start with families with children under the age of five. And, come December 1st, it’s open to families that are income qualified,” Wortman said.
To apply at your local Community Action Agency, you will need to bring along proof of income, current bill and other required paperwork.
