PEORIA, Ill. – It’s that time of the year…when we’re inside more, spreading colds and viruses around.
Dr. Brian Curtis, with OSF HealthCare, tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan”, they’re seeing a bit of everything right now.
“You’re seeing croup…which we see in the really little kids, there’s been some pertussis that we’ve seen in some areas, then there’s the common colds. We haven’t really seen the flu kick in yet. And, then there’s the GI bug that’s been traveling around for a couple of weeks recently too,” Curtis says.
When it comes to over-the-counter medications, Curtis says for the most part…don’t bother taking them.
“You know the decongestants, the cold medications, they’re really been shown not to work…and they tend to have a lot of side effects with them. Whether that’s agitation, inability to sleep with the decongestants, or some of the antihistamines make people tired. So, they haven’t really been shown to work…the Zinc, the Vitamin C also haven’t been shown to work,” Curtis says.
The best thing you can do when you start to feel sick, Curtis says, is to stay home and rest, and make sure you drink plenty of fluids…so you stay hydrated.
