SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Stars, cornfields, and silhouettes of Abraham Lincoln.
Those are some of the elements included in the designs of the ten finalists for a new Illinois state flag.
The Illinois Flag Commission picked the ten on Monday, with Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias saying nearly 5,000 entries were submitted for the new design.
Governor J.B. Pritzker signed Senate Bill 1818 into law in August to create the commission for a new flag.
Next month, the public will get to vote on which of the ten designs they like the most, but Giannoulias says those are not the only choices.
“If you don’t like the new designs, you can vote to keep the current flag, or choose from two historic ones,” Giannoulias said.
The historic designs include the 1918 Centennial Flag and the 1968 Sesquicentennial Flag.
The flag commission will then present its findings in April to the General Assembly, who will then vote on whether to change the design or keep the current one.
If a new flag is created, it will be the third one in Illinois’ history.
