BRIMFIELD, Ill. – A mother and daughter from Ohio died in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 74 near Brimfield early Sunday morning.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says 41-year-old Leila Mohamad and 15-year-old Zilan Sino, both of Columbus, OH, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
He says the crash occurred just after 4:15 A.M. near mile marker 71 at Bell School Road in the eastbound lanes.
Police say the 2005 Siena XLE they were traveling in was westbound when, for unknown reasons, went off the road through a center median, and crossed into the eastbound lanes. The vehicle then went into a grassy area, struck a tree, and caught on fire.
Harwood says three people were able to escape the vehicle, and were taken to OSF Healthcare Saint Francis in serious, but stable condition.
He says Mohamad and Sino were traveling to Iowa to visit family.
Autopsies on both are scheduled for Monday.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by Illinois State Police.
