SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Almost the entire State of Illinois, with the exception of the Quincy area, is in an Excessive Heat Warning through Wednesday night, with highs all over the state near 100, and heat index values well over that.
Some of the main advice the Illinois Emergency Management Agency gives in weather like this: stay hydrated.
“We always tell people to consume plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids,” said Kevin Sur, spokesperson, Illinois Emergency Management Agency. “Even if you don’t feel thirsty, water, diluted juices, electrolyte solutions are always best. Definitely, stay away from carbonated drinks.”
Sur also suggests wearing light but long-sleeved clothing, and maybe just don’t do a lot of outdoor activities until the heat breaks.
“For those who like to be outside, our trail paths look inviting. Obviously, our lake fronts look beautiful. But, consider curtailing your strenuous activities until temperatures and humidity become a bit more tenable,” said Sur.
In Peoria, Friday and Saturday will see highs in the 80’s, but it warms right back up after that.
The main tips from the state:
• Heed all heat watches, warnings, and advisories shared by your local Emergency Management agency
• Keep hydrated and avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages
• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and stay out of the sun when possible
• Avoid strenuous activities
• Check on your neighbors, particularly older residents, and make sure they are OK
• Monitor updates provided by the National Weather Service (NWS) offices: Chicago, Quad Cities, Lincoln, St. Louis, and Paducah
