WASHINGTON, Ill. – Washington aldermen will take more time to consider term limits for the city.
A motion to approve enacting limits of three four-year terms for mayors and aldermen was tabled at Monday night’s meeting.
Ward Three Alderman Bobby Martin made the motion to table the proposal. Martin says he supports term limits on a federal level. But notes it may not make sense for Washington, because not a lot of people want to run for office in the city.
“Nobody ran for one of our openings. Only one person ran for two, and only two people ran for the other one,” Martin said. “We don’t have all the people, all the time, to run.”
Martin also questioned if the amount of terms should be limited to two, instead of three. And he would like to see the issue decided by voters in a referendum.
The issue could come up again later this month.
