PEORIA Ill. – After a series of juvenile arrests made in the Peoria area recently – local officials are speaking out.
Peoria County State’s Attorney, Jodi Hoos, spoke with WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show” this morning about the 15-year-old who was arrested over the weekend, for allegedly shooting a 9-year-old.
Hoos confirms her office is working around the clock with Peoria Police to find solutions for this recurring problem.
“We want, just as much as the Police, to be able to protect our community and keep these individuals, if they are violent, keep them off the street – but we also have to follow the law and can only present what we have,” Hoos said.
Officials say juveniles who have been detained at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center have an 87% chance of being arrested again.
Hoos says in cases of juveniles being released early, it’s not always in their hands.
“We have no control of that, the judge has no control, every sentence to the Juvenile Detention Center is for an indeterminate time up to their 21st birthday,” Hoos said.
The state’s attorney office encourages local non-profits that are geared towards helping local youth, to have conversations with their kids, to lessen future juvenile arrests made in the Peoria area.
