PEORIA, Ill. – A 15-year-old accused in a shooting Sunday night in Peoria that injured a nine-year-old boy has been charged in the incident.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says the teenager has been charged with Aggravated Battery with a Firearm and Attempted Burglary.
The incident occurred at the River West Apartments, where the 9-year-old boy was struck while inside his residence. At last check, the 9-year-old was listed in stable condition.
The state’s attorney’s office has petitioned to transfer the case to adult court, with the 15-year-old to remain at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center.
Witness accounts claim three individuals were attempting to break into a vehicle, with the trio fleeing after being confronted. The 15-year-old is accused of firing a shot in the direction of a witness as he ran away.
Another 15-year-old and a 14-year-old were arrested Thursday in connection to the case.
Prosecutors say the 15-year-old appeared to be wearing a court-ordered GPS ankle monitor from a previous case that is pending, and tracking data revealed a monitoring unit belonging to them was at the scene of the shooting.
The state’s attorney’s office says in that previous case, the court ruled at a detention hearing that home confinement and electronic monitoring were more appropriate, due to the nature and circumstances of the case.
