PEORIA, Ill. – The goals for the Peoria and Pekin Salvation Army’s 2024-25 Tree of Lights campaign have been reached.
The Salvation Army announced Monday night that the Peoria campaign just reached its mark with a total of $2,009,623.60. The Pekin campaign beat its goal of $168,000, with a total of $189,388.11.
Major Heath Sells says the Peoria goal was reached in the final days with a “Holy Moment.”
“One of the last checks we got came from a long time donor who recently passed away from his family, on his birthday, and that pushed us over our $2 million, so the Lord is generous and the community is generous, and for that, we’re extremely grateful,” Sells said.
Sells says the money raised will go to support the Salvation Army’s programs, such as child care and homeless services. He says Peoria’s amount is around 25-30% of its annual budget.
The Salvation Army also gave out Recognition Awards for the community Monday night. WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show” received the “Others” Award, given for exemplifying an extraordinary spirit of service to others.
Sells says the award was earned by helping spread the word of the campaign and the programs and services offered by the Salvation Army.
Other award winners include the William Booth Award for Keith Martin of Peoria and Jim Wolf of Pekin, and Pastor Judy Doyle of Pekin for the “Spirit of The Army Award.”
