PEORIA Ill. – Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias wants to clear up what is expected for Illinoisans ahead of this looming “REAL ID” federal deadline.
Giannoulias hosted a press conference Thursday morning and stated the deadline for getting a “REAL ID” is on May 7th.
These I-D’s are going to be needed for those over the age of 18 in order to fly domestically – but are not needed for usual daily activities.
“As of May 7th, if you have a current and valid standard driver’s license, you do not need a Real-ID to legally drive a vehicle, you do not need a Real ID to show your identification, you do not need a Real ID for proof of citizenship,” Giannoulias said.
Giannoulias goes on to say individuals still will need them for certain situations.
“You will need a Real ID compliant driver’s license or state ID if you are over the age of 18 and intend to fly a commercial airline or visit certain federal facilities. Let me be very clear – you can still fly if you have a valid US Passport – you can still fly if you have a valid US Passport,” Giannoulias said.
The Illinois Secretary of State explained what is required to obtain a Real ID.
“You’ll need to show the following: proof of identity, such as a passport or birth certificate, proof of a valid social security number, such as a social security card or W2, two forms of IL proof of residency, and verification of your written signature,” Giannoulias said.
The state is booking appointments on its website for those wanting or needing a REAL ID.
