PEORIA, Ill. –Peoria firefighters responded to a fire call from the 800 Block of E. McClure around 10:45 p.m. Thursday.
When they arrived, crews found fire in the front porch area and on the first floor of the house.
Battalion Chief Ralph Phillips said it was a difficult fire to fight due to the heavy involvement on the front porch, which burned the incoming power lines and energized the weather-head.
Two people inside escaped the fire, but one of them needed treatment for smoke inhalation and burns.
Firefighters searched all levels of the home and found a cat that did not survive.
An investigator determined a candle left unattended set off the blaze.
Crews remained on the scene for an extended time due to extensive overhaul of hot spots.
Heavy fire damage on the first floor and smoke damage throughout the home were reported.
