EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The East Peoria City Council unanimously approved banning pedestrians from standing or gathering at ten intersections throughout the city this week.
Several council members cited safety concerns with the ongoing increase in traffic.
The ban is in effect at the following intersections:
- North Main St. and Camp St.
- Main St. and Washington St.
- South Main St. and Silver St.
- West Washington Street and Spinder Drive
- West Washington St. and Clock Tower Dr.
- West Washington St. and River Rd.
- West Camp St. and River Rd.
- West Camp St. and Riverside Dr.
- West Camp St. and Clock Tower Dr.
- West Camp St. and Spinder Dr.
“You also have to think of the idea that traffic gets stacked up, and you might swerve, but now you’re in another accident with a vehicle,” City Attorney Scott Brunton said.
Council members told 25 News, fortunately, no one has been killed while standing on a median, but accidents on those streets are common.
Standing in a median is now considered an ordinance violation in East Peoria, but it’s unclear how much pedestrians could be fined or what other punishments they could face.
