BLOOMINGTON, Ill. โ Republicans in the Illinois House are demanding that the Illinois High School Association comply with a Trump administration executive order regarding transgender athletes.
House Minority Leader Tony McCombie last month sent a letter to the IHSA, signed by 40 Republican State Representatives. Peoria-area legislators who signed the letter include Bill Hauter, Ryan Spain, Dennis Tipsword, and Travis Weaver.
The letter asks for a written response to the organizationโs intent to amend policy to comply with the order that bans โathletes from participating in single-sex sports opposite of their sex assigned at birth.โ
In a statement after releasing the letter, McCombie says โfairness and safety in sports is not a political issue and should not be up for debate.โ She continues to say the federal policy helps โensure the integrity of competition and well-being of all student-athletes.โ
The IHSA changed its policy in September of 2023, to determine eligibility of transgender student athletes on a case-by-case basis.
25 News reports the IHSA is not making a public comment on the issue at this time, but the organization is working on writing a response and connecting with state leaders.
