PEORIA, Ill. — Coming soon to a bridge near you: construction.
The Illinois Department of Transportation on Monday rolled out details of its statewide Multi-Year Plan, part of the Rebuild Illinois capital plan.
The $23.5 billion project has been touted as an investment in the reconstructing and rebuilding of roadways, replacement and repair of bridges, and system support for engineering and land acquistion, among other things.
Work announced for District 4 — the twelve-county district that contains Peoria as its major metropolitan area — included a nearly $125 million investment in Fulton County to expand U.S. 24/Illinois 9 to four lanes and for bridge replacements from Banner to Kingston Mines.
Meanwhile, the Murray Baker Bridge in Tazewell County was slated for a $38.5 million rehabilitation and new bridge deck on I-74/Illinois 29, which connects Peoria to East Peoria over the Illinois River.
Resurfacing and major bridge work were announced for both I-74 and I-474 in Peoria County. The I-74 project involves 20 miles of road, from Illinois 78 to I-474.
“The I-74 major rehabilitation is on the November letting,” said IDOT Engineer Kensil Garnett.
“Our estimated closure date is from March and October [of 2020].”
$42.6 million was being allocated for the I-74 work.
$51.1 million was being spent on I-474 for 14.2 miles of road from I-74 to the Illinois River.
“We’ll start looking at the design portion of 474 in 2020, with construction to come in the outer years of the Multi-Year Plan,” said Garnett.
The Multi-Year Plan was designed to run from fiscal year 2020 through fiscal year 2025.
