WASHINGTON, Ill. – Washington’s police chief will be calling it a career.
Mike McCoy announced Wednesday that he will be retiring on Monday, May 5th.
McCoy served as Washington’s Chief of Police for the past eight years, previously serving as Peoria County Sheriff for 15 years. He began his career in 19-71 as an officer in Beardstown.
In his 48 years, McCoy has also served as a correctional officer and deputy sheriff in the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, followed by working as a patrolman, detective, and sergeant. McCoy has also served as the police chief in Peoria Heights.
In a statement, Mayor Gary Manier says McCoy has been an “icon in law enforcement.”
“We were blessed that he came to Washington after being the Peoria County Sheriff and he brought his personal brand of professionalism and positive image,” Manier said.
Mayor-elect Lilija Stevens says she is “grateful” for the contributions McCoy has made to the police department and the community.
McCoy has also been involved with supporting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and is a co-founder of St. Jude Runs.
