CHICAGO, Ill. – Planned Parenthood of Illinois is, in the organization’s words, “furious” over the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe versus Wade.
The organization’s CEO, Jennifer Welch, says since Illinois has done the right thing in protecting abortion rights here, more abortions may end up being done here.
“Planned Parenthood of Illinois has been working for years to prepare for the additional anticipated desire for 20,000 to 30,000 patients who are now forced to flee their home states to get care here in Illinois,” said Welch, at a Chicago news conference.
The organization says they’ll keep providing health care to those who need it — as their slogan says — no matter what.
Welch says the state protecting the rights of those wanting abortions was a good thing; but she says, however, she needs Illinois lawmakers to do more.
“We call on our leaders in Springfield to take the necessary next steps for true equitable access to abortion care,” said Welch. “We must increase funding, cut red tape for abortion providers, and push forward all possible progress for abortion care in Illinois.”
The organization is using the announcement as a push for financial donations, with a pop-up message and donation request referencing the ruling on its website.
