WASHINGTON, Ill. – A new look for the City Council is now official after new members, and a new mayor, were sworn-in Monday night.
Lilija Stevens is now mayor, taking over the role from Gary Manier after he served for 24 years as leader of the city. Stevens, the first female mayor in the city, received a standing ovation after being sworn-in. She called it “humbling” and was grateful for the support.
In his last words as mayor, Manier thanked his family and stated he believed the city was in good hands, while wishing the new council well.
Four new alderpersons were also sworn-in. They are Todd Sluder and Paula Johnson in Ward One, Michael Ernst in District Two, and Brandon Moss in Ward Three. Johnson was appointed to a two-year term to serve the remainder of Stevens’ term.
Monday was the final city council meeting for, now former, Alderpersons Mike Brownfield, Brian Butler, and Brett Adams. Each received a parting gift of a painting of the Washington City Square.
Stevens says she likes what she sees from the new council.
“I see a really bright future with the ages of the people on the council and the enthusiasm and the want to include everybody in decision making,” Stevens said.
Before the swearing-in, Ward Four Alderman John Blundy stated that Stevens becoming mayor was a “meaningful moment” for Washington, and deserves “full support.” He also criticized Manier for missing an opportunity for a “collaborative handoff,” adding that he believed Stevens was “met with resistance, rather than respect.”
The city council on Monday also approved two interim positions. Jeff Stevens was approved as interim Police Chief, filling the role after Mike McCoy’s retirement. City Engineer Dennis Carr will also serve as interim City Administrator. Washington has been without an administrator since Jim Snider was placed on administrative leave in August of 20-24.
